Tour Kit

What to take and what to leave behind!

Your Tour Kit will depend on, countries to be visited, time of year, length and purpose of journey. On a long daytrip all your needs can be carried in a bumbag/fannypack. At the other extreme an extended tour off the beaten track may require you to carry a full survival pack i.e. tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment & utensils in addition to food, water, clothing & first-aid.

This is girlgears suggested list of what to take, bearing in mind whatever you choose means "weight", be selective, lay it all out and be tough with your final decision!

Luggage

Choose from front or rear panniers, bar bags, rucksacks, rear rack top bags and seat post-bags. Whatever you choose can affect cycle handling so ask advise from your local cycle shop and experienced cycle tourers. Our personal choice is the Ortlieb light range of rear panniers and bar bags with map case. These are tried and tested, rugged and 100% waterproof see www.ortlieb.com.

Clothing

Choose technical clothing made from easy care, fast drying, hardwearing and comfortable fabrics include a set of street clothes for those "off bike" occasions. Select waterproof and windproof outer layers for changeable weather conditions.

Bike kit

Basic requirements depend on your style of bike and your challenge, but should include a puncture repair kit/spare tube, tools, bike lock and tyre pump.

Toiletries/first-aid

These do depend on each individual requirement but save space and weight by selecting small plastic leak-proof bottles, which can be filled from your home store. Collect hotel bathroom packs whenever you can (legally) or buy travel size items. Seek out multi-purpose products and first aid essentials from Adventure shops. Finally, pack a small bottle of perfume…it's a girlie thing!
